I had a great lunch this past weekend with a few of my Veterinary friends. It’s always a blast getting together with them. After the talk of amputation, spaying, fleas, heartworms, etc., we got on the subject of cybersecurity. They asked me…”is this real”. Unfortunately for them, I jumped on my soap box. “YES IT IS REAL!” Then I rattled off 3 or 4 TV shows that explain cybercrime and gave them the 10,000 foot explanation.
The moral of this story is that there are still people out there who luckily have not had to experience ransomware or a virus attack. I’m glad for them but I felt like Debbie Downer when I had to say “it’s not IF you get attacked”, it’s when. Fortunately for us, we do the IT support for the clinic so I can put things in place that I would like to see them have.
I never think that people who don’t understand cybersecurity live under rocks. I can’t save an animals life so who am I to say anything. They do what they do (very well might I add) and I do what I do. Protect them. So the short answer to the questions is YES…it is real!
